Butterfly Bushes

A guaranteed butterfly magnet is called a buddleia, or a butterfly bush. On a weekend at Cattail Creek, these were the perfect porch companions. Watch them fly here.

The shrub can’t be missed as it has long, arching shoots that according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. Even more intriguing are the masses of blossoms that accompany a landscape of green and fill the air with a sweet scent that butterflies, hummingbirds and humans can’t resist.

In colder temperatures, the bush can die. However, like all legacies, a butterfly bush proves its resilience and will grow back in sunny seasons.

The numerous butterflies bring great joy to a day devoted to watching “nature T.V.” i.e. observing nature unconditionally. What a great way to begin the spring season.
