Urban Trails: Duke Wall

A tree stands tall in the heart of the wall trail surrounding Duke East Campus

The Triangle has pockets of trails and wilderness surrounding the cities of Raleigh and Durham. We enjoyed a beautiful day by walking the 1.63 mile trail around Duke East Campus. The trail has a total ascent of 23.95 ft and has a maximum elevation of 440.09 ft.  With a location in the heart of Durham, one can see the long-standing tobacco history through old warehouses and smoke stacks that have since been modernized. The surrounding trees and open spaces were beautiful, not to mention very much appreciated by the dog.

Near this urban trail is Duke Forest, a 7,060 teaching and research forest of Duke University. This area has a variety of ecosystems represented and has been preserved for research and recreation since the 1930s. We are thankful for these and other green spaces that not only leave a lasting legacy, but also positively affect the environment and lifestyle of the surrounding community.
